The Greene County Ram basketball teams split games Friday against the Roland-Story Norsemen in Story City.
The girls played their best quarter of the game in the fourth, scoring 20 points, but it was too little, too late. They lost 59-39.
In the first half the Rams scored only eight points – one field goal and six free throws. The score was 25-8 at halftime and 43-17 after three quarters. The Rams put up 22 points in the fourth quarter, including three 3-point shots.
Laurin Lyons led in scoring with 15 points. Kenna Marquardt scored eight, Taylor Wessling and Hannah Promes scored seven each, and Samantha Hardaway added two. The tres were owned by Wessling, Lyons and Promes.
Unofficially the Rams made nine of 26 shots from 2-point range and three of six from 3-point range for38 percent shooting from the floor. They made 11 of 16 free throws for 69 percent.
The Ram girls are now 3-12 overall and 2-9 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference. Roland-Story is 10-5 overall and 7-4 in the conference.
The boys topped the Norsemen 72-54. The teams traded the lead for the first six minutes of the game, but the Rams went up 19-14 with one minute to play in the first and didn’t give it up. The score was 24-18 after one quarter, 35-24 at the intermission after a sluggish second quarter, and 56-40 after three quarters.
The Norsemen got a dose of the Treys, with Trey Tucker scoring 23 points and Trey Hinote scoring 17. Tucker made two 3-point shots and made seven of seven free throws. Hinote three 3-point shots; he had no trips to the charity line.
Wade Adcock scored 12 points, Lance Hughes scored 10 including a 3-pointer, Chase Stoline scored six points, and Calvin Skalla and Ben Wilkins scored two points.
Unofficially the Rams made 20 of 30 2-point shots and six of 21 3-point shots for 51 percent shooting. They made 14 of 18 free throws for 77 percent.
The boys are now 9-4 overall and 8-2 in the HOIAC. They’re one game short of matching their wins from the 2015-6 season.
The Rams host Winterset Monday in a Mega Night rescheduled from Jan. 16. The play Saydel on the road Tuesday and then go to Jewell Friday to play South Hamilton. South Hamilton is leading on the boys’ side of the conference.
